Activities: Started in 1993 as Maryknoll Rehabilitation for Blind
Cambodians with Community Based Services. In 1997 started the training
for doctors and nurses. Year 2000 the Project was handed over to Caritas
Cambodia. Mission Statement: To integrate blind people into society. To
train eye care personnel and to develop provincial eye units. Services
available: Community Based Rehabilitation Program that coordinates various
activities such as: medical eye care referral, income generating activities,
orientation and mobility training, skills for daily living, organizing
treatment for harelip and plastic surgery and other referals; Training
of eye care personnel; Eye Care service at Takeo Eye Hospital; Development
of provincial eye units.

Activities: To improve national capacity to provide basic eye care
services. Proposed activities: 1. Prevent blindness from trachoma - a)
Support basic eye units for trichiasis surgeries in high prevalence areas
by providing materials and logistics support to outreach services. b)
Develop trachoma educational materials to be used at health centers and
for community health education. c) Train Village Health Volunteer on trachoma
d) Assist National Prevention of Blindness Office to determine other high
risk areas in Cambodia using results from the National Micro-nutrient
Survey conducted by HKI in year 2000. 2. Expand primary eye care services
- a) Assist the National Prevention of Blindness Office with technical
and materials support for expanding primary eye care services. Targets:
Support to National Prevention of Blindness Program of the Ministry of
Health. Support Provincial Eye Care Personnel to perform lid surgeries
in the community. Provision of ophthalmic drugs and surgical supplies
for outreach lid surgery services.
