Activities: Social assistance (including subsidies for the needy) and education (alphabetization
classes, Braille teaching and sports classes). Publishing of a three-monthly magazine in Braille,
diskettes, audio and inkprint. Braille and audio libraries. Courses in professional training (telephone
operators/receptionists, computer operators, Braille technicians). Provision of technical devices
for the blind. ACAPO is the Portuguese Delegate in the European Blind Union and the World Blind Union.

Activities: The main objective of the APD is to represent and defend the general, individual
and collective interests of Portuguese disabled persons. The activity of APD since its foundation
in April, 1972 has been focused on the promotion of equal rights for disabled people. APD has pursued
these goals in developing a wide range of actions: Raising public awareness through public campaigns;
acting as partners on the setting and follow up of new legislations; fighting against discrimination
through public campaigns, publicity and making use of legal means; delivering services, guidance
and counselling to our individual members, their families on the base of a human rights and self determination
perspective.

Activities: BN holds talking books (copies for listening at home) and books in Braille (use
by loan). Either produce books themselves or they would be given to them or bought abroad. Magazines
in Braille are available for loan and for sale. Hold newsletter "Ponto e Som". Also catalogues of
Braille music (not for loan or for sale). Work on various activities concerning the co-operation between
libraries and providers of reading materials for the blind throughout the country. Try to reinforce
motivation of reading, including resarch on the field of Braille usage in Portugal. BN presents the
"Branco Rodrigues Award" to the best published work of a blind author every three years.
