Blind and Partially Sighted Participants

Phone design
Liked the button design
Easy to identify buttons by touch
Positive click when a button was pressed
Prefer one dot on the 5

Battery and Cards
In favour of the memory card not being underneath the battery as this involved taking the back cover off and battery out.
None of the participants could get the memory card out with assistance
Reasons for this were given as:
Finding where the opening is
Getting the lid open
Finding where the card was
Pushing it to get it out
Remembering which way round it went back in as it wasn’t obvious by touch

Deaf and Hard of Hearing Participants

Due to constraints beyond the evaluator's control, section 3 was not covered in favour of covering section 4

Participants with Limited Dexterity

Phone design
The tapered buttons are better
The function buttons should be separate from the numeric keypad
The navigation button is better than a joystick

Battery and Cards
The backcover is difficult
The Memory card is difficult to remove
The SIM card is difficult to remove.

Participants with Learning Difficulties

Due to constraints beyond the evaluator's control, section 3 was not covered in favour of covering section 4

Section 4 - Guided Discussion

This section was used to discuss anything that hadn’t already previously been brought up

Blind and Partially Sighted Participants

Input and output methods
An alphanumeric keypad was favoured over a QWERTY keyboard
Don’t really need voice input (and its not that good at the moment)
Don’t really understand predictive text and haven’t used it

Deaf and Hard of Hearing Participants

Input and output methods
The vibrate function is vital and would be great if it was totally customisable (e.g. vibrate for any alert)
BSL users would like to write messages in BSL with the phone/network translating them when sent to a non BSL user

Manuals
Difficult to understand as they are very technical
Would be easier to read if they were in plan language and had more (simple) diagrams

Making calls
Voice calls are impossible for profoundly deaf people
T-link or neck loops are essential for hard of hearing users due to interference caused by the phone and the hearing aid.  Users wore these accessories all the time so they could accept a call as soon as it came in.

Participants with Limited Dexteriy

Input and output methods

Voice input would be beneficial to reduce the amount of physical inputting of information
Predictive text is important for any word based information

Making Calls
Handsfree is a must as cant hold the phone for long periods
Bluetooth is important

Participants with Learning Difficulties

Input and output methods
All users would like voice input as well as voice output
General preference for alphanumeric keypad
Preference for non-predictive messaging as they don’t understand it

Instructions and Packaging
Instructions generally not used as too complicated

Alerts and Shortcuts
Most users prefer to have audible alerts the others preferred tactile alerts or both audible and tactile alerts
All users like shortcuts to access applications

Making Calls
Most prefer to hold the phone next to their ear although some like to use headsets or use the loudspeaker
Bluetooth wasn’t a term or concept they were familiar with.

Access/Usage of the Services
Most did not know that they could get services on their phone.
Only a couple of the participants had actually used the services but this usage was very limited

Blind and Partially Sighted Focus Group Notes

Group One
The group consisted of 4 end users:

Section 1

All users but Participant Four had used a mobile for up to 5 years. Participant Four has been using a mobile for 3 years.

Interestingly, Participant Three had used an accessible phone for the longest period, about 14 months, with Participant Four using one for about 9 months, Participant One about 4 months and Participant Two only using an accessible for 2 months.

None of the participants use the Internet services.  This is due to cost and they have a computer they can use.

They all have the ability to take photos but haven’t as they felt they could line up the object correctly with the camera lens.

None of the participants used predictive text

Section 2

All participants were asked about the barriers they face or did face.

Participant One
Instructions not being in accessible formats
Getting the SIM card and battery out – putting them back the right way.
Reviewing what he has just written in a text message (word by word)
Keypad layout (.e.g. the on/off switch)

Participant Two
Doesn’t trust predictive text
Not knowing what is on the buttons
Not knowing what the buttons do
Being in the mainstream – doesn’t want to be different or excluded

Participant Three
Button placement on the phone
Button shape
Button size
Button layout

Participant Four
Knowing what the phone can/cant do.
Knowing which phones to avoid/which to go for
Manuals – access to information
If I spend the money will I be able to use it?
Access to available screen reading solutions
Choice of phones that can accept TALKS
Statements from mobile phone operators not being in an accessible format.

Section 3

The participants were asked to comment on the Nokia 6680 phone.

Participant One
Pretty easy to use
The buttons are not quite as flush against each other per other models
The keys have a gradient so it is easy to identify the keys
The buttons on the side of the numeric keys are dome shaped so can be identified

Participant Two
The design of the keys was good.
This phone is potentially easy to use
Likes dots on the side of the 5 key

Participant Three
Likes one dot on the 5
Likes the feel of the buttons
Bigger phones are better as they have more space for the keys
Plastic keys are better than rubber keys as they provide more feedback
Likes the positive click that is produced when he pressed a button
Prefers a joystick to the navigational button

Participant Four
Better than some other phones
The phone is a good shape
Orientation is simple
Prefers one dot on the five
Liked the button design of this phone.

The memory card placement on the Nokia 6680 was discussed.  In principle the participants were in favour it not being underneath the battery as this involved taking the back cover and battery out to get to it.  However when they were asked to get the card out none of the participants could do it without assistance.  They gave the following points to explain what made it difficult:
Finding where the opening was
Getting the clasp open
Pushing the memory card in to get it out
Remembering which way round the card went

Section 4

When asked to compared two phones (a Nokia 6310 and a Nokia 7610 all participants preferred the button design of the Nokia 6310.  However all said they could get used to the layout of the 7610 if they had too.

Input methods
The group preferred an alphanumeric keyboard over a QWERTY keyboard.
Don’t really need voice input
Voice input isn’t really that good

Group Two

The group consisted of 4 people:

Section 1

All users had used a mobile for over 5 years.

Web access (or lack of it)
Button design
Dot on the 5
Knowing which socket is for the charger
Knowing which way round to put connectors into the phone

Participant Four
Font size – not changeable
Button design – need them to be easy to feel (chunky)
Contrast
Ease of changing colour schemes
Putting the battery in

Section 3

The group felt that the Nokia 6680 had a good button design and decided to talk about what makes a good button configuration
A positive click when the button is pressed
Each button is separated from the other buttons
The buttons are raised from the surface
Each button has a definite shape
The keypad has a standard layout
The backlight that comes through the keys must contrast with the keys
The number keys must be separated from the function/navigation keys

Section 4

There was a discussion over an older model of a phone (Nokia 6310) a fairly recent phone (Nokia 7610).  The entire group preferred the older phone, citing the buttons as the reason for this choice.

Camera + MMS Function
Wouldn’t know if the object was in focus
Couldn’t be sure what I was taking a picture of

Predictive Text messaging
Never used it in anger

Never tried it
Don’t know what it is
Why is it on as a default setting – this is really bad.

Output methods
The vibrate function is very useful
The vibrate function should be customisable so I can choose the frequency and strength of the vibrations
Its very useful to personalise ringtones for groups of contacts or individual contacts

Manuals
Manuals are usually very small and very difficult to read
The written information contrasts poorly with the paper
The manual is not in plain language and is very technical
It is inaccessible as it is in print and PDF only

Cyprus School for the Blind Users

The group consisted of eight end users:

All users have had a mobile for longer than five years however none of them have an accessible mobile phone at the time of this focus group.

Deaf and Hard of Hearing Focus Group Notes

The group consisted of 5 people

Section 1

The participants had used mobile phones between 3 – 5 years
2 of the participants could use the mobile to make voice calls with the assistance of a neck loop or t-link.  The other 3 were not able to make voice calls due to the severity of their deafness

Section 2

The participants were asked what barriers they faced to using mobile phones

Participant One
Interference between the mobile and the hearing aid
Have to use a t-link otherwise I cant use a phone to make calls

Participant Two
The alternatives to voice to communicate are expensive (text and video)
The voice calling function is totally useless to me

Participant Three
The voice calling function is totally useless to me
Answer machine – I cant hear the messages and I don’t know how to switch the facility off

Participant Four
Interference between the mobile and the hearing aid
Have to have a t-link with me to use the voice calling function

Participant Five
Interference between the mobile and the hearing aid
I get worried when someone calls as I cant hear them and I think “why are they calling me”
I cant use the voicemail

Section 3

Due to constraints beyond the evaluator's control, section 3 was not covered in favour of covering section 4

Section 4

Input and Output methods
The vibrate function is essential
It would be great to have it fully customisable
All the phone to vibrate for any alert not just for incoming texts/calls
BSL users would like to be able to write messages in BSL with the phone/network translating them when there were sent to a non BSL user.

Manuals
They are difficult to understand as they are very technical
English is not my first language so I find them difficult to read
They would be easier to read if they used plain language and had more diagrams (which were simple)

Making calls
Voice calls are impossible for profoundly deaf people
Voice calls can only be made by hard of hearing users if they have a t-link or neckloop due to the interference between the phone and the hearing aid
The two hard of hearing participants wore the t-link/neckloop all the time that the mobile phone was on just in case the phone rang
The participants felt the t-link worked better as it went directly over the back of the hearing aid.  However there was no affordance for up and down movements of the head so it was prone to falling off.

Participant Two
Simplicity of the phone
Size of buttons
Size of the text on the buttons
Physically cant use mobile for long periods due to dexterity
Changes to mobile design (software and hardware)
Price
Complexity of menus (need quick access)

Section 3

Buttons
Tapered buttons are better
Function buttons should be different from numeric keypad
Navigation button is better than a joystick
Buttons must be hand neutral
Buttons must be raised from the surface
Tactile feedback is important

Cards
Memory card difficult
SIM cards difficult

Section 4

Input/Output
Voice in would be beneficial
I like to physically press the button (Generation issue?)
Predictive text important
Predictive text must be available when inputting any word based information

Connectivity
Handsfree is a must as cant hold the phone for a long period of time
Bluetooth is great as I can keep the phone in my pocket and press one button on the headset to take a call
