Screen Braille Communicator
Picture
This is a portable unit about the size of a text telephone. It has a QWERTY keyboard and LCD display on one side, and on the other (where a text phone would have its rubber cups) is a braille keyboard and a display. The braille display can be 1 or 8 cells of 6-dot braille. What the braille user inputs is seen on the LCD display, and what the typist inputs is beld in a buffer and can be scrolled through by the deafblind user. The braille is grade 1 with no group contractions (OU, ING, AND, etc are not available). When the deafblind person has finished reading what is in the buffer an LED lights up. The Screen Braille Communicator is designed for face-to-face communication, so the buffer holding the text is only 512 characters long, but this can be expanded up to 1 or 2k. It is powered by a rechargeable battery.

FaceToFace

FaceToFace™ teams up with Bluetooth™ connectivity and the PAC Mate™ accessible Pocket PC to create a truly portable way for deaf-blind individuals to engage in real time conversations with others. FaceToFace works much like a TTY call without a phone line. The two parties communicate wirelessly at up to 30 feet apart – virtually anywhere in the same room. The deaf-blind party uses the PAC Mate’s QWERTY or Perkins-style keyboard to write messages, and the sighted party types on an HP iPAQ Pocket PC. If you make a typing error, just backspace and retype. The entire conversation displays on both devices – visually on the iPAQ and in braille on the PAC Mate. Each party is individually identified, so it’s easy to keep contextual track of conversations. Conversations can be saved to text files, and text can be pasted right into a conversation for increased speed and accuracy. FaceToFace works with other PAC Mate users, as well. For those times when you don’t need a portable solution, there’s even a copy of the program that runs on your Bluetooth enabled desktop or laptop PC. FaceToFace includes the application, an iPAQ with thumb keyboard, and a CompactFlash™ Bluetooth card. It can be run on a PAC Mate BX or QX accessible Pocket PC, available with either a 20-cell or 40-cell refreshable braille display (not included).
Price: $1400.00 (Includes FaceToFace application, HP iPAQ with thumb keyboard, and CompactFlash™ Bluetooth card.)
