Scope: To support the most promising and innovative research aimed at preventing and treating disabling diseases with the exception of cancer, cardiovascular and HIV/AIDS.
Types of awards available: Research Training Fellowships and project grants.
Restrictions: Project grants only made to those in tenured positions in a university or institution. Research Training Fellowships are not intended as project grants or specifically for the purpose of higher/postgraduate education. It is expected that candidates will register for a higher degree (PhD/MD/MRes/MPhil). Candidates are expected to have at least some experience of research following their first degree. Medical graduates should not be more than 6 years post MRCP (or equivalent). Scientists are normally expected to be at the PhD or postdoctoral level and should not have more than 3 years research experience. The host insitution should be a Univeristy Department, Teaching Hospital or other recognised research centres within the UK. Applicants should not be based in an MRC Unit. It is essential that the necessary equipment and facilities required for the proposed research must be available to the candidate. Applicants cannot apply for both schemes in the same year.
Method of research fund allocation: Project grant - By Council based on recommendations of advisory panels and following assessment by external referees. Research Training Fellowships - By Council based on assessment of proposal and candidate interview.
Submission of applications: Applicants for both types of awards should initially submit a one-page outline (including clinical relevance and estimation of costs). Project grant proposals should be sent to the Research Manager at the above address or research@action.org.uk. Research Training Fellowship proposals should be emailed to rtf@action.org.uk. If appropriate, an application form is issued.
Example of current research activities: Is better diagnosis the key to preventing blindness in premature babies?; Osteoporosis: What makes good quality bone?; Could stem cells help brain damaged babies?
