Scope: Nesta aims to shape innovation policies that will help the UK meet national innovation challenges of the 21st century. That means influencing government and regulatory policy, or considering how policy may support the work of investment and initiatives teams. Nesta aims to: Increase the quality and quantity of research in innovation; Develop outstanding innovation policy; Build a national network of leading thinkers in innovation.
Types of awards available: Working in collaboration with partners to produce a strong portfolio of research projects. That means, Nesta may do their own research or commission partner institutes to produce research for them. Nesta are working on five key areas of research to help inform innovation policy in the UK: Understanding UK innovation; Place; Education and culture; Science, Technology, The Arts and Interdisciplinary; Innovation and foreign policy and Rationality and innovation. The deadline for research proposals on the arts and innovation has now closed. Nesta will be issuing a new call for proposals at the end of February 2007.

Scope: Grant-making reflects the Foundation's aim of bringing about improvements in society through research and practical experiment. The wide range of activities supported by the Foundation fall into two main categories: support of research and innovation that will bring about beneficial social change though Project Grants, development of research and professional capacity in the sciences and the social sciences, targeted at people in the early stages of their careers, and the Elizabeth Nuffield Educational Fund which supports women students.
Types of awards available: Grants fall into two areas: Grants for the development of research and professional capacity in science and social science and Grants for Research and/or Innovative Projects.
Restrictions: Grants are made to UK organisations, and support work that will be mainly based in the UK, although the Trustees welcome proposals for collaborative projects involving partners in European or Commonwealth countries.
Submission of Applications: Applicants should initially submit a written outline proposal. If the decision of the Foundation is for you to proceed with a full application the staff member dealing with your proposal may suggest a meeting, write with questions, or, if matters are straightforward, advise you to proceed to a full application.
