Scope: To fund research into the prevention, alleviation and cure of sight loss.
Types of awards available: The Trust's programme of research and development aims to identify practical ways in which they and others can improve the lives of people with sight loss. Each year the Trust commits around £300,000 to fund social and public health research and development projects. The policy will focus on: all types of social research; epidemiology or public health; multi-disciplinary research. Pocklington funds research which has the potential for practical application for visually impaired people to improve quality of life, either in the short term or longer term. The new research policy has three themes. The overarching theme is improving quality of life. Issues about people from ethnic minorities will be included within general projects. Improving social inclusion, independence and quality of life for people with sight loss; Improving and developing service outcome; Public health issues, including prevention of blindness and promotion of eye health.
Method of research fund allocation: There is a process of assessment and review to ensure only good quality research is funded. Generally, projects are brought to the Committee as an outline proposal, or a project brief is developed and approved. Proposals for major projects are subject to referee opinion which is put with a summary of the full proposal to the Committee for approval.
Submission of applications: Proposals may be submitted in outline form in the first instance and ideas may be discussed with the Research & Development Director. Full proposals should then be submitted: Through the Head of Department, confirming that research can be accommodated within the resources available to the staff concerned, and that the presentation and scientific case are of a sufficiently high standard to bear scrutiny by external referees. By email attachment/disk and in paper copy and in a form accessible to lay Trustees as well as expert assessors. Proposals should be submitted to Research Administrator Deborah Brown in electronic form to deborahb@pocklington-trust.org.uk and in paper copy form (5 copies) to the Research Administrator at the address above. Pocklington is happy to receive proposals in line with its research policy throughout the year.
Examples of current research activities: Circumstances of people over 50 with sight loss; Improving the access of ethnic minority visually impaired people to appropriate services; Housing and support needs of working age adults with sight loss.
