Scope: To foster and promote research with the aim of improving
human and animal health.
Types of awards available: Offers grants in the general areas of: Biomedical science - Funding across all areas of biomedical science, including project/programme, fellowship and infrastructure support. For UK and non-UK researchers.
Technology transfer - Early-stage funding for research with a potential medical application.
Medical humanities - Funding for research in
biomedical ethics and the
history of medicine.
Public engagement - Support for innovative projects promoting public engagement with science or research exploring science and society.
Method of research fund allocation: Peer reviewed by external referees
and Trust advisory committees.
Submission of applications: Preliminary enquiry for all schemes
except UK-based project and programme grants, followed by detailed application
form. Details are available in the Trust's grants handbook and on its
website (www.wellcome.ac.uk).
Deadlines for competitive schemes are advertised in the scientific press.

Wingate Scholarships

Scope: Wingate Scholarships are awarded to individuals of great potential or proven excellence who need financial support to undertake pioneering or original work of intellectual, scientific, artistic, social or environmental value, and to outstandingly talented musicians for advanced training.
Types of Awards Available: Awards are designed to help with the costs of a specific project which may last up to 3 years. The average total award is about £6,500 and the maximum in any one year is £10,000.
Restrictions: Previous recipients of Wingate Scholarships are not eligible to apply and applications from abroad are not accepted.
Methods of Research Fund Allocation: The Scholarship Committee
conducts interviews of short-listed candidates in May, and results are
announced in June.
Submission of applications: The deadline for receipt of applications for 2007/2008 was February 1 2007.
Candidates who have applied for 2007/2008 will be notifed whether or not they have been shortlisted by the end of April.
Application Materials for 2008/2009 will be available on the Foundation's web site from September 15th 2007. Then you may either download an application form or send a large A4 stamped self addressed envelope to the address above.
Materials cannot be sent out in response to emails.

Scope: The Fellowships are to enable men and women from all walks
of life to acquire knowledge and experience abroad. In the process, they
gain a better understanding of the lives and different cultures of people
overseas and, on their return, their effectiveness at work and their contribution
to the community is enhanced greatly.
Types of awards available: Travelling Fellowships of 4 to 8 weeks
to undertake a project overseas. When awarded a Fellowship, the applicant
will receive a grant that will cover all Fellowship expenses: return air
fare, daily living, travel within the countries being visited, travel
insurance and, in exceptional cases, certain home expenses.
Restrictions: Eligibility is restricted to British Citizens. Applicants
do not require formal educational or professional qualifications. Applications
are considered for individual projects only; joint or group applications
will not be accepted. The Trust cannot award grants for attending courses
or academic studies. The Trust generally prefers to award Fellowships
to people unlikely to obtain funding from other sources and who are resident
in the UK. In particular, the Trust is looking for those to whom the opportunity
represents the Chance of a Lifetime.
Method of research fund allocation: In June each year, the Trust
announces the categories for the following year. The Council of the Trust
selects the annual categories from the following fields: Agriculture and
Horticulture; Animal Welfare; Business, Industry and Commerce; Arts and
Crafts; Conservation and The Environment; Education and Training; The
Professions and Public Services; Medical and Health; Sport, Recreation
and Adventure; Open and General Subjects; The Citizen and Society; Science
and Technology; Special Awards. Short-listed candidates are interviewed by the Trust.
Submission of applications: Application forms may be requested in June.
Alternatively, the on-line application form may be used. Closing date
will be in October. By December all applicants will be informed whether
or not they have been short listed. Short listed applicants will be invited
to elaborate on their original plan. References will be taken up at this
stage. In January the short listed applicants will be interviewed in the
Trust Office. The Fellowship Awards will be announced mid February.
