Teletext

Screenshot of teletextOn analogue television it is possible to convert the textual part of teletext into synthetic speech or Braille. The exception is when the position of the text has meaning; for instance the temperatures on a weather map.

The equivalent of teletext on digital television, pages that often combine text and video, is more difficult to convert to audio (speech) output, but this can be achieved with a specialised (and expensive) set top box which uses extensive computer facilities to achieve this. The UK services use a platform called MHEG to provide the digital text services, other European countries are using a more sophisticated standard known as the Mutimedia Home Platform, MHP, and there is little or no commonality between them.
